There is a nice little visitor’s center, that has a little information and history of how the area was created. The area was formed 15,000 and 2,000 years ago, during 8 major eruptive periods. Deep cracks stretch 52 miles from the Great Rift and lava erupted creating a field that grew to cover 618 square miles. As recently as 1983 there was an earthquake that made the highest mountain in Idaho a foot taller, and the Lost River Valley got 8 feet deeper. It has been 2,000 years since the last eruption but it could erupt at any time. They project that one mile of lava will be erupted when the next eruption occurs.
