Getting to Toadstool Geological Park is a little bit tricky. If you don’t have four-wheel-drive, the roads are dirt and gravel combination and they’re not as well kept as they could be. Keep in mind this is really an off the grid place to visit and although it’s entirely worth your time, if it has snowed, rained or is icy, the roads may be tricky to navigate.

Once you get off Highway 2 North take Toadstool Road for 11.4 miles to FS Rd. 902 and continue on road road 902 for 1.4 miles to the toadstool campground.

Camping Tips to Explore Toadstool Geological Park

The first tip to visit toadstool geologic park is to know that camping and parking is first come first serve. There are no reservations in advance for this location. It is open year-round but no that’s the hiking.

Once you park the car and get all set up, you’ll have three options for hiking. There’s a 3 mile trail to Hudson-Meng education and research center or there’s a 1 mile interpretive loop trail. The third option is a 5 mile loop that begins at the campground proceeds on the gravel section of the interpretive trail for a short distance before heading north through the badlands and grasslands on the Great Plains Trail .

We took the 1 mile interpretive loop trail, and it was an amazing way to spend the morning. The hike was relatively easy, although it would not be accessible if you were not used to hiking as the ground was not always even. There is a lot of interesting rock formations that you can experience and navigate through while tracking along the trail. It’s a good time to talk about prehistoric animals think about the fact that you’re walking amongst fossils that are 30 million years old and use it as an educational experience with your friends or family that you’re hiking with.
