Be Very, Very, Quiet

Be very very quiet, we’re hunting wascely mushrooms, Oregon is an amazing trip, there is so much to see do and experience. Portland Oregon has some amazing food and drink locations. If you come during the summer for sure hit up the Rose Garden. If you come in the fall, mushrooms foraging is where it’s at. The forests are incredibly epic and are worth the time spent in them. You cannot go wrong with a long weekend in Oregon.

We have created the perfect packing list to get everything you need for your small town getaway into one lightweight personal item. Flights are getting more expensive, and carry-ons have become a charge for almost every flight. Getting everything you need into the perfect personal item is one of the best tricks to keep costs low.

Well you see, what had happened was… AirBNB sent an email: Experiences

And we fell way down the rabbit hole and popped up in a little farm in Oregon, to spend the weekend mushroom hunting.

Rewind to the logistics of getting to a small farm in Oregon, not so cheap flights but we still travel… We flew into Portland, on a late flight in, stayed near the airport overnight, woke up early (benefits of east coast living) and started our exploration.

First stop, yummy breakfast… order it all, Sweedeedee had us covered.  The pastries were to die for, and hold you over as there can be a bit of a wait for the main course. After you fill the tank, you could take a stroll down the street and hit the Peninsula Park Rose Garden it looks super gorgeous, but being Floridians we didn’t want to melt so we skipped it this time.

We then went in search of some fun books, you literally cannot beat Powell’s City of Books, it has obscure collectable editions, new prints, and is the worlds largest independent bookstore, support local go buy some books. (free sniffs with purchase)

Because we are terrible timekeepers we already had to leave and start our trek to our AirBNB experience in Myrtle Point, OR. We stayed at the cutest little farm, Myrtle Glen Farm, where we were welcomed by Dan and Micha, and then proceeded to have the yummiest meal full of mushrooms I have ever had. (side note I was previously scarred by some terrible wine/ canned mushroom non-sense and wasn’t even sure I liked mushrooms before this trip) A quick tour of the property, and then settled in for the night, in our private cabin equipped with wood burning fireplace. It was the ideal start to what every escape to the woods should be.

We were awakened bright and early by the yummy smells of breakfast, and the pitter patter of puppy paws on the roof. (she likes to be able to see, and sneakily climbs onto the roof) After our bellies were full of yummy food, (who knew? mushrooms could be so good?) we got a quick lesson on the types of mushrooms we would be hunting for, and also ones to avoid. Side note, those ones in the fairy movies with the red tops and white spots, don’t eat those… Then we packed our snacky snacks and headed out to sores and boils lane, can’t tell you the real name its top secret.

You know the scene in the movie with the epic treeline in the background, the one with the 100 foot fir trees? We rambled up a dirt road, emerged from the cars and felt so very tiny looking up at those tree tops. Coming from Florida, the safety of nature is questionable at best, think 2 foot spiders, 100 pound snakes, and 12 foot alligators, but we were assured rambling through the undergrowth was nothing to fear. We grabbed our little red riding hood baskets and were off to hunt some mushrooms. We started out timid with all levels of adventurers in our group, Micha lead the way and showed us all the best hiding spots. Her childlike excitement over each find was contagious, and the group that started out following the leader ended up 30 feet down the hillside yelling about the epic trophy they just found while crawling under a bush.

Basket full of mushrooms!!
Basket full of mushrooms!!

Covered in mud, leaves, definitely some bugs, and baskets weighed down with more mushrooms than could fit in one carry-on bag, no photo evidence but it did happen. (P.S. TSA in Portland says it happens all the time, who knew?) I wish we had an epic picture of all of those mushrooms, it really was so crazy to take through TSA.
